East Baton Rouge Sheriff Elmer Litchfield is recovering at Our Lady of the Lake hospital after undergoing surgery for a hernia. According to the sheriff's office, 79-year-old Litchfield is in a private room, and it is unknown when he will return to active duty. Litchfield has been elected as sheriff six times and has held public office for 23 years.
